Let’s get your modem connected

Look at the pictures below and tap the one that looks like the equipment in your home. We will show you only what to plug in and what to do next.

Which one looks like yours?

Look beside your modem, in the garage or where the internet cable comes into your home. Tap the closest photo. The colour and cables may be slightly different.

You have a white wall box

Use the box inside the house. Leave the outside box and the thin fibre cable alone.

  1. Find the data socket underneath.If there is one socket, use it. If there are sockets numbered 1 to 4, Nexus can show the right number.
  2. Plug in the thick Ethernet cable.Connect it from that socket to the port marked WAN or Internet on your modem/router.
  3. Turn both boxes on.On the nbn box, Power and Optical should be green and Alarm should be off.

You have the black upright box

It uses a round screw-on wall socket, like an old pay-TV connection.

  1. Connect the round white cable.Screw it onto the wall socket and the round socket on the black box. Finger-tight is enough—do not use tools.
  2. Connect the thick Ethernet cable.Plug it from the black box into the WAN or Internet port on your modem/router.
  3. Turn both boxes on and wait.Allow up to 10 minutes. The four front lights should eventually stay on.

You have the small flat white box

Turn it around. The three sockets are marked A Power, B Wall Socket and C Gateway.

  1. Connect the telephone wall socket to B.Use the thin telephone cable. Remove any old ADSL filter or splitter.
  2. Connect C to your modem/router.Use the thick Ethernet cable and plug it into the modem/router port marked WAN or Internet.
  3. Connect power to A.Turn on the white box and the modem/router, then wait up to 10 minutes.

You plug straight into the telephone wall socket

You need a modem/router with a small socket marked DSL. A router with only a WAN socket will not work here by itself.

  1. Use one short telephone cable.Plug it straight from the wall socket into the modem/router socket marked DSL.
  2. Remove old phone accessories.Take out any ADSL filter, splitter, double adaptor or telephone while setting up.
  3. Turn on the modem/router and wait.The DSL light should stop flashing and stay on.

Leave the antenna cable and wall connection exactly where they are.

  1. Find the data socket on the white indoor box.If it has several numbered sockets, Nexus can show the right number.
  2. Connect it to your modem/router.Use the thick Ethernet cable and plug it into the port marked WAN or Internet.
  3. Turn both boxes on.Do not unplug or move the cable that goes outside to the antenna.

Open Nexus below and it will show the connection type recorded for your address. If the equipment still does not match, send GippsHost one photo of the boxes and wall sockets near your modem and we will identify them with you.

Step 2

What is written on your modem or router?

Look at the sticker underneath or on the back. Tap the matching name below and we will walk you through that exact model.

Look for the word “Model”. You do not need the serial number or Wi-Fi password. If the label is hard to reach, take a photo with your phone and zoom in.

TP-Link VX230vAlso useful for VX1800v and newer TP-Link Aginet modem/routers
  1. Connect to the Wi-Fi name on the label, or connect a computer to a yellow LAN port.
  2. Type tplinkmodem.net into the browser address bar. If that does not open, use 192.168.1.1.
  3. Create the router login password when prompted. This is for the settings page, not your Wi-Fi password.
  4. Open Quick Setup. For FTTN/FTTB choose DSL Modem Router; for FTTP, HFC, FTTC or Fixed Wireless choose Wireless Router / EWAN.
  5. Choose Dynamic IP. Leave IPTV/VLAN disabled, do not enter a username, and keep DNS and MAC address automatic/default.
  6. Name the Wi-Fi, set a strong password, save and wait for the Internet light to settle.
  7. If Quick Setup is no longer shown, use Advanced > Network > DSLWAN for FTTN/FTTB or Advanced > Network > EWAN for the other technologies.

TP-Link Archer VR seriesVR1600v, VR2100, VR600, VR400 and similar VDSL modem/routers
  1. Connect by the default Wi-Fi or a LAN cable, then open tplinkmodem.net or 192.168.1.1.
  2. Sign in with the admin password on the label or the password previously created for the router.
  3. Open Quick Setup. Select VDSL for FTTN/FTTB. For an nbn® connection box, select Wireless Router / EWAN and use the router’s LAN4/WAN or dedicated WAN port shown on its label.
  4. Set Internet Connection Type to Dynamic IP. Choose no VLAN/IPTV and use the default MAC address.
  5. Set the Wi-Fi name and password, finish the wizard and wait up to five minutes.

TP-Link Archer AX / C seriesAX55, AX73, AX80, C6, C80 and other Ethernet routers
  1. Connect the nbn® box or NCD to the blue WAN port. These models need a separate VDSL2 modem for FTTN/FTTB.
  2. Connect to the label Wi-Fi or a LAN port, then open tplinkwifi.net or 192.168.0.1.
  3. Create or enter the router admin password, then start Quick Setup.
  4. Choose Dynamic IP, then Use Default MAC Address.
  5. Leave Special ISP Settings (IPTV/VLAN) off. Set the Wi-Fi name and password, save, and let the connection test finish.

NetComm NF18MESHCloudMesh VDSL modem/router
  1. Connect to the Wi-Fi on the rear label or a yellow Ethernet/LAN port.
  2. Open cloudmesh.home. If that does not work, open 192.168.20.1.
  3. Use username admin and the unique password printed on the rear label.
  4. Choose Yes, start the setup wizard.
  5. Select VDSL for FTTN/FTTB, or Ethernet WAN for FTTP, HFC, FTTC or Fixed Wireless.
  6. Select Dynamic IP. Leave the VLAN field blank/off, then choose Next.
  7. Set the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi names and passwords, review the summary and finish. Allow three to four minutes for the connection.

NetComm NF20 / NF20MESHWi-Fi 6 VDSL modem/router and CloudMesh gateway
  1. Connect to the Wi-Fi on the security card/label or a yellow LAN port, then open 192.168.20.1.
  2. Use username admin and the unique password printed underneath the gateway.
  3. Open Basic Setup.
  4. Select VDSL for FTTN/FTTB, or Ethernet WAN for FTTP, HFC, FTTC or Fixed Wireless.
  5. Choose IP over Ethernet (IPoE), select No VLAN / Untagged when asked, and choose Obtain an IP address automatically.
  6. Review the summary, choose Apply/Save and wait a few minutes.

TP-Link Deco meshM4, M5, X20, X50, X55, X60, XE75, BE-series and similar
  1. Install the TP-Link Deco app and sign in or create a TP-Link ID. Deco setup is app-only.
  2. Connect the main Deco by Ethernet to the nbn® box/NCD. For FTTN/FTTB, connect it to a separate VDSL2 modem instead.
  3. In the app choose Let’s Begin, select the model and follow the light prompts.
  4. For Internet Connection Type, choose Dynamic IP. Leave IPTV/VLAN disabled.
  5. Create the Wi-Fi name and password. Once the main Deco is online, use Add a Deco for the other units.
  6. If an existing router is staying in place, finish setup and use More > Advanced > Operation Mode > Access Point to avoid two routers performing NAT.

ASUS RT / DSL / ZenWiFiRT-AX models, DSL-AC/AX modem routers and ZenWiFi mesh
  1. For an RT or ZenWiFi model, connect the nbn® box/NCD to the blue WAN port. For FTTN/FTTB, use an ASUS DSL model or a separate VDSL2 modem.
  2. Connect to the label Wi-Fi or a LAN port, then open asusrouter.com or the ASUS Router app.
  3. Choose Create A New Network. If automatic detection does not finish, choose Manual Setting.
  4. Select Automatic IP (DHCP). Do not enable ISP VLAN tagging or authentication.
  5. Set the Wi-Fi name and password, then create a separate router login name and password.
  6. Finish and confirm that Internet Status shows connected.

eero and Google Nest Wifieero 6/6+/Pro and Google Wifi/Nest Wifi models

eero

  1. Install the eero app and make sure the phone has mobile data during setup.
  2. Connect the gateway eero by Ethernet to the nbn® box/NCD, or to a separate VDSL2 modem for FTTN/FTTB.
  3. Choose Set up a new network and follow the app to create the Wi-Fi name and password. DHCP is the default.
  4. If prompted for ISP settings, open Settings > ISP Settings, use DHCP and leave Uplink VLAN off.

Google Nest Wifi / Google Wifi

  1. Connect the router unit’s WAN port to the nbn® box/NCD, or to a separate VDSL2 modem for FTTN/FTTB.
  2. Open Google Home, choose Add > Device, then scan the QR code underneath the router.
  3. Follow the prompts to create the Wi-Fi network. Google uses DHCP by default, so no WAN login is required.
  4. Add the remaining points only after the main router is online, then let the app run its mesh test.

Another make or modelNetgear, D-Link, DrayTek, Ubiquiti, MikroTik or an ISP-supplied router

Do not work from a similar-looking router. Find the exact model and hardware version on its label, then:

  1. Use the manufacturer’s manual to open its Internet, WAN or Quick Setup page.
  2. For FTTP/HFC/FTTC/Fixed Wireless, choose Ethernet WAN/router mode. For FTTN/FTTB, confirm it is VDSL2 compatible and choose VDSL mode.
  3. Apply the GippsHost internet settings below.
  4. If the screen asks for anything not listed there, stop and send us a photo of the router label and that screen. We will walk you through the exact fields.

Using a phone service too? These steps connect the internet. Do not copy VoIP usernames or passwords from another provider. Contact GippsHost and we will confirm whether your router supports the phone service and guide you through the separate phone settings.

You usually only need to choose Dynamic IP or Automatic IP. If the screen asks for more, use these values:

Stop if your activation email says PPPoE or the screen does not match these words. Some older services use individual details, and GippsHost will confirm them with you.

Step 3

Is it working?

  1. Wait 5 to 10 minutes

    The lights may flash while everything connects. Give them time to settle.

  2. Try one website

    Connect your phone or computer to the new Wi-Fi, then open a website you do not already have open.

  3. Still not working? Let Nexus check it

    Open My Services in Nexus (opens in a new tab), choose the address, then select View Details > Quick Health Check.
