GippsHost Onboarding Centre
Let’s get you connected.
From the first cable to your first connection. Follow the steps for your home, at your own pace.
You have a setup in progress in this tab.
Which one looks like yours?
Look where the internet comes into your home. Choose the equipment you recognise, or match the connection type in your activation email.
That’s okay. You don’t need to guess.
In Nexus (opens in a new tab), select your service address, then View Details → Connection to find the technology and assigned port. Come back and choose it above.
Still unsure? Ask us to identify your equipment. Leave the cables where they are for now.
My white wall box looks different
FTTP boxes come in several designs, including newer boxes with a single data socket. Check the technology shown in Nexus rather than relying on colour alone. Compare nbn’s FTTP picture guide (PDF, opens in a new tab).
A quick check before plugging in.
These instructions are for getting a new service or replacement router connected.
Has GippsHost confirmed your service is active?
Check your activation email or service status in Nexus. Placing an order or receiving a router doesn’t mean the connection is ready. If an installation is still booked, wait for confirmation before changing the setup.
View my service in Nexus (opens in a new tab) ↗Have these handy
- Your modem/router and its power supply.
- Your installed nbn connection box and its power supply, plus a CAT5e or CAT6 Ethernet cable.
- A VDSL2 modem/router and a short telephone cable. A router with only a WAN port needs a separate VDSL2 modem.
- A phone or computer to connect to your Wi-Fi. Mobile data is handy while you set up.
- Your assigned data port from the activation email or Nexus, if the box has multiple numbered sockets.
If it was working and has stopped, use troubleshooting instead. Keep any existing phone or alarm service in mind before unplugging equipment.
Let’s connect the right cables.
Your connection: Choose your connection in step 1. Match the port labels printed on your equipment.
- Find the data socket on the indoor nbn box. If it has one data socket, use it. If it has sockets numbered 1–4, use the UNI-D port assigned in your activation email or Nexus.
- Connect an Ethernet cable to your router. It runs from that data socket to the port marked WAN or Internet on the router.
- Turn on both boxes. On older FTTP boxes, Power and Optical should be green and Alarm off. Use the nbn picture guide for your box’s exact lights.
Leave the outside box and thin fibre cable alone.
- Connect the round coaxial cable. Screw it onto the wall socket and the black nbn box. Finger-tight is enough.
- Connect the Ethernet cable. It runs from the nbn box to your router’s WAN or Internet port.
- Turn on both boxes and wait up to 10 minutes. The four lights on the black box should eventually stay on.
- Connect the telephone wall socket to B. Use the thin telephone cable and the socket marked B Wall Socket on the nbn device. Remove old ADSL filters or splitters.
- Connect C to your router. An Ethernet cable runs from C Gateway to your router’s WAN or Internet port.
- Connect power to A. Switch on both devices and allow up to 10 minutes for the nbn device to connect.
- Use the telephone wall socket. Connect a short telephone cable straight to your VDSL2 modem’s DSL port.
- Remove old ADSL accessories. Take out filters, splitters and double adaptors on this socket while setting up.
- Turn on your modem and wait. The DSL light should stop flashing and stay on. You’ll choose VDSL mode in the next step.
There is no separate indoor nbn connection box on FTTN/FTTB. Don’t connect a telephone cable to an Ethernet WAN port.
- Find the assigned data socket on the indoor box. Check your activation email or Nexus if there is more than one numbered data socket.
- Connect it to your router. Use an Ethernet cable to the port marked WAN or Internet.
- Turn on the indoor box and your router. Leave the cable to the outdoor antenna exactly where it is.
My equipment or port labels don’t match
Pause here and ask GippsHost for help. Tell us the connection type and which labels you can see. Don’t move cables at random or press a recessed Reset button.
A few settings, made simpler.
Look for the model name on the label underneath or behind your router. You don’t need to enter any passwords on this website.
Your settings are already taken care of.
Leave the internet settings as GippsHost supplied them. Connect using the Wi-Fi details supplied with your router, then continue to check the connection.
Your mode is VDSL / DSL modem router. Your service uses the DSL port. If you’re using a separate VDSL modem, ask us to confirm how your router connects to it.
Your mode is Ethernet WAN / wireless router. Your internet cable comes from the nbn box. A DSL-only mode won’t use that cable.

Another make or modelNetgear, D-Link, DrayTek, Ubiquiti, MikroTik or an ISP-supplied router
Do not work from a similar-looking router. Find the exact model and hardware version on its label, then:
- Use the manufacturer’s manual to open its Internet, WAN or Quick Setup page.
- For FTTP/HFC/FTTC/Fixed Wireless, choose Ethernet WAN/router mode. For FTTN/FTTB, confirm it is VDSL2 compatible and choose VDSL mode.
- Apply the GippsHost internet settings below.
- If the screen asks for anything not listed there, stop and send us a photo of the router label and that screen. We will walk you through the exact fields.
GippsHost internet settings
For current standard nbn services, choose Dynamic IP / Automatic IP / DHCP / IPoE. No internet username or password is required. Leave VLAN/IPTV off or untagged, and obtain IP and DNS automatically using the router’s default MAC address.
If your activation email specifies PPPoE or different settings, use that advice and contact us. Some older services have individual settings.
Have a phone service too? Internet setup doesn’t configure VoIP. Ask us about your phone settings before replacing a router that runs your phone.
Time to try it out.
- Give it 5–10 minutes. Let the equipment and lights settle before making more changes.
- Join your new Wi-Fi and open a fresh website. If using a phone, temporarily switch off mobile data for this check so you know the internet is coming through Wi-Fi. Turn mobile data back on if you need it to continue this guide.
- Check your speed once you’re online. For the clearest result, use a computer connected to the router with Ethernet and pause big downloads. Wi-Fi distance and the device can affect the result.
Let’s get you the right help.
On mobile data, open Nexus (opens in a new tab), select your address and run Quick Health Check. Keep the result and note the lights on your nbn box and router.
Follow the troubleshooting guide or contact our team. Don’t factory-reset the router or run Full Connection Test unless we ask.
Where should my router go?
Choose a central, open spot, off the floor and away from cupboards, metal appliances and thick walls. Keep the nbn box where it is installed. If you use mesh Wi-Fi, add the other units after the main router is online.
Connected. And looked after.
